The Maryland race track of Havre De Grace, on Post Road, held its inaugural meeting on 12th August 1912 and developed into one of the most important tracks in the United States. Its principal race was the Havre De Grace Handicap which was quaintly called 'The Graw' by locals and was won by Seabisquit in 1938. Famous horses have graced the 'Grace track', notably Man O'War who won the Potomac Handicap on 29th September 1920. Some 16 years later War Admiral was also triumphant at the course in his first race on 25th April 1936. Another feature race at the track was the Eastern Shore Stakes. The track could not withstand the competition from nearby Delaware Park and Garden State Park and had to close its doors in 1950, being sold to Alfred G Vanderbilt II in 1951. The grounds were sold to Alfred Vanderbilt and part of it became the Havre De Grace High School, while the majority of the former site is owned by Maryland National Guard. |
